 History

We are called to use our musical gifts and instruments to enhance the worship experience by encouraging, lifting spirits, stirring souls and winning souls for Christ. The Gospel Chorus was founded by the late Sister Vina Lee Jones in 1944 under the leadership of Reverend James H. Saunders.  Sister Jones served for the major portion of twenty years until her passing in 1964.  During some of those years, the late Sister Etta Stewart and the late Deacon Durant served as President. Our spiritual and financial service commitment has been achieved during the leaderships of our past presidents:  Sister Barbara Davis, Sister Mattie Dixon and Sister Betty Jean Pittman who served as president for over 34 years.  The current president is Sister Bettye Turner.  The Gospel Chorus has been blessed with gifted music directors and directresses:  Sister Hermina Robinson Burke, Brother John Madison, Brother Fredrick Brown, Brother Robert Habershaw, Sister Betty King Vance, Brother Herbert Spence and Brother Alonzo Small.  Our present directress, DeaconessMary Mason, began this ministry in 1993 and has been a faithful and active member of Bethany since childhood.

Our Music Ministry is committed to allowing the music experience to be joyful, uplifting and meaningful.  Our prayer is that God will order our steps to stay focused on Him as we grow in grace, enjoy our Christian fellowship, and enhance our Music Ministry in this church and community.  We pray that others will see Christ in us and will want to join us in lifting up the name of Jesus.

If you are interested in joining this ministry, please see Mrs. Bettye Turner for more information.
